Bruce Engelhardt

Bruce is currently President of Flagship Coaching LLC where he uses his passion for teaching, mentoring and coaching to enable executives to get results. He serves at Severn Leadership Group as a mentor, presenter and now Director. He is also presenter for Strategy Bridge International where he has taught a hybrid course to NASA executives on change management.

Bruce has 35+ years of experience in executive leadership, engineering operations and finance. He is a life-long learner with a solid background in leading in technology, financial services, government and the not for profit environment.

Past experience

Previously, Bruce served as the President/CEO at Navy Mutual Aid Association, a tax-exempt commercial life insurance provider. Under his leadership, Navy Mutual grew from $1.9 billion to over $3.1 billion in assets and annual premium income from $59 million to $86 million. He served for 20 years as a volunteer official and on the Board of Directors, Navy Federal Credit Union, which is the world’s largest credit Union and in Forbes top places to work. He was elected as First Vice Chair while at Navy Federal and served in the capacity for over a decade. While in the U.S. Navy he mastered Department of Defense financial management, was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral and served as the Chief Budget Officer for Dept. of the Navy where he was responsible for leading a 200 person team in developing and high level execution of the Navy and Marine Corps budget. In this capacity, he coached and provided leadership to a diverse group in a political and government context.

Operationally, Bruce was a Nuclear Submarine Commander in the US Navy. He served on both fast attack and strategic missile submarines. He commanded USS Drum (SSN677) which received the Presidential Unit Citation for successful operations of national importance. He also commanded Submarine Squadron Seven which was composed of 12 Los Angeles class submarines out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Later on he was Commander Submarine Group Nine, which was comprised of all Trident submarines on the east coast. Over his years in the Navy, he mentored and coached hundreds of young leaders with the goal of helping them transform from able technologists to be accomplished leaders.

Bruce is an Associated Certified Coach (ACC) as certified by the International Coaching Federation/Center for Executive Coaching. He completed an executive fellowship with the John F Kennedy School of Government Executive Fellowship, Harvard University and also studied at the Center for Creative Leadership – Leadership at the Peak. He received a Master’s Degree in Science (MS) (Systems Management) from the University of Southern California. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy with a B.S. in Physics.
