Build a Culture of Mentoring

SLG’s Mentor Certification prepares seasoned leaders of character to walk alongside the people they mentor, using the holistic model we use within our own Fellows Program. That shared language and commitment to virtues equips them to mentor with distinction across your organization, with a structure, a curriculum, and a community that keeps it from fading once the launch enthusiasm wears off.

Why Internal Mentor Programs Typically Fail

Most internal mentor programs are built on good intentions, but they rely on the few leaders trying to do the right thing without ever having been trained. There is no curriculum or set of principles shared between mentor and mentee, and no community of practice where mentors learn from each other. Programs launch, and then quietly stall within a year.

For your most experienced leaders, certification is also a way to apply decades of hard-won judgment to the rising leaders of tomorrow. Many tenured professionals are looking for a way to use their expertise in service of the next generation. Mentoring paves the way for giving back without having to start a new career. While anyone can call themselves a mentor, organizations with Certified Mentors build their future workforce thoughtfully.

Our Leadership Perspective

Our leadership perspective is grounded in four basic precepts that set the foundation for cultivating emotionally healthy leaders who serve their teams.

These are the same four precepts that anchor the Fellows Program and the Teams Program. Certified Mentors work from them too, which is what gives a mentoring conversation inside your organization the same foundation as one inside ours.

  1. Leadership and followership are defined by one’s character.
  2. Character is shaped by a core set of timeless virtues.
  3. Service to others is not a style of leadership, but a learned behavior.
  4. Leadership and followership together create effective teams.
