Your Experience Is Not Behind You. It Is Exactly What the Next Generation Needs.

You did not spend decades leading teams, navigating crises, and learning the hard way so that wisdom could sit unused. SLG’s Mentor Certification does not teach you leadership; you already have that. It gives you a proven method for passing it on, so your hard-won judgment reaches the leaders who need it to take on the challenges of tomorrow.

What Being an SLG Mentor Looks Like

Mentoring with SLG works on your terms, not a bureaucratic schedule someone else built for you.

You will be matched with a Fellow, a professional already committed to their own growth through the Fellows Program, and you will walk alongside them through conversations that go beyond advice-giving into real character formation. Meetings are one-on-one, scheduled around your calendar rather than ours, and grounded in a relationship model you will learn during certification: how to ask the right questions, when to challenge, and when to simply listen.

This is not a committee. It is not a standing weekly obligation you will be chasing off your calendar in six months. It is a relationship, one you can shape, sustain, and show up to fully, because it is built around the time you actually have to give.

The Impact Is Real, and You Will See It

Here is the fundamental question: will this actually matter, or is it another well-meaning role that quietly changes nothing?

It matters, and you will know it does. SLG matches Mentors with Fellows who have already demonstrated real commitment to their own growth, so you are not chasing down a reluctant mentee or wondering if the person across from you actually wants to be there. Every Fellow you are matched with has stepped into the program because they are serious about becoming a different and better leader. You will watch that transformation happen, in real conversations, over the course of the relationship, not as an abstraction you are told about later but as something you experience firsthand.

Why Mentor With SLG

Intergenerational impact

The leadership failures you see in organizations and in government are not inevitable. Mentoring is a direct, tangible way to be part of actual change, one Fellow and one conversation at a time.

Ongoing learning, not just teaching

Mentors consistently say the relationship runs in both directions. Understanding today’s emerging leaders, how they think, what they are navigating, what hope looks like to them, sharpens your own perspective as much as it shapes theirs.

You will receive more than you give

This is not a line. Mentors describe finding a sense of purpose and connection through this work that few post-career roles offer: the satisfaction of watching someone become who they are capable of being, and knowing you had a hand in it.

What You Get

  • Formal certification in SLG’s Virtuous Leadership mentoring model. Training that validates your expertise and structures it with a proven method, not a course that teaches you to lead.
  • A systems-oriented methodology, including the LITER framework (Love, Integrity, Truth, Excellence, and Relationships) and Courage as the activating virtue, so your wisdom has a shared language and a clear approach to draw on.
  • Ongoing involvement in a community of 120+ Certified Mentors. Seasoned professionals who share your conviction that leadership is defined by character, not position, and who become genuine peers rather than fellow volunteers.
  • A deep relationship with a Fellow, matched deliberately, not assigned at random.

Profile of a Typical SLG Mentor

SLG Mentors come from a wide range of backgrounds, united by decades of leadership experience and a conviction that character, not title, defines a leader.

  • Former C-suite executives and senior vice presidents
  • Retired military officers, O-5 and above
  • Business owners stepping back from daily operations
  • Senior government officials
  • Leaders from corporate, nonprofit, healthcare, financial services, and defense sectors

What they share is not industry or title. It is decades of hard-won judgment, and a genuine desire to put it to use.

Is There a Cost?

There is a one-time contribution of $500 to cover training and materials.

Certification is what connects your decades of experience with the proven LITER framework, SLG’s holistic mentoring methodology, and a peer community of 120+ Certified Mentors. The contribution covers the training that ensures your mentorship, and every Mentor’s in the SLG network, meets the same standard.

Scholarships and waivers are available.

If you are ready to transform your current mindset, attitude, approach to challenges, work, life and your purpose or mission in life, boldly enroll as an SLG Fellow. Or, if you are a graduate of the SLG Fellowship Program and you want to change the world, one Fellow at a time, accept the privilege to serve as a Mentor.

Questions Prospective Mentors Ask

If you have spent decades leading people, navigating hard decisions, and learning through both success and failure, you have exactly what SLG Fellows are looking for. Certification gives that experience a method. It does not fill a gap in it.

Meetings are scheduled around your calendar, not a fixed institutional schedule. Most Mentors meet with their Fellow on a regular but flexible cadence: enough consistency to build a real relationship, without becoming a rigid weekly obligation.

SLG matches Mentors and Fellows deliberately, not at random, based on background and fit. If a match genuinely is not working, SLG works with you to find a better one. The goal is a relationship that is worth both people’s time.

Yes. The virtues and judgment you have built over a career do not expire when you step back from a title. Certification refreshes you on today’s coaching methodologies so your experience translates clearly to the leaders you will mentor.

It is a fair question. The $500 one-time contribution is not payment for volunteering. It covers the training and materials that equip you with a proven framework, a structured methodology, and a community of 120+ certified peers, so your time and wisdom translate into real, visible impact rather than well-intentioned but unstructured advice.

Is Your Organization Sending You?

If you are being certified as part of your organization’s internal mentoring initiative rather than as an individual volunteer, you are looking for Mentor Certification for Organizations: the same training model, built for leaders mentoring inside their own company.
